Who is ASI?

ASI and Veterans

ASI Company News, Blog, News, Who is ASI?

Fred Thompson – U.S. Army veteran – founded Accessibility Services, Inc. in 1989. His vision to was to customize and provide the most advanced environmental control units for disabled veterans with spinal cord injuries. Thompson was disappointed to find that in general, adaptive equipment for quadriplegics , communications devices for quadriplegics and quadriplegic assistive technologies were severely lacking.  Thus, he expanded the company’s mission and focus to include the unique and exceptional needs of the entire quadriplegic community.

Veterans have and always will remain an important part of ASI.  Not only do we hire veterans, but we proudly serve veterans.  Many of Veterans Administration (VA) Spinal Cord Injury Units (SCI) are equipped with our proprietary autonoME, which combines an environmental control unit (ECU) and speech generating device (SCG) in one convenient package.  Having an ECU in hospital settings not only benefits patients, but caregivers and hospital staff as well.

We also offer quadriplegic assistive technology to individuals in residential settings.  In some cases, the VA will even pay for the autonoME. We have equipped hundreds of homes of veterans with spinal cord injuries with adaptive equipment for quadriplegics, including the autonoME. If you or someone you love is a veteran with s spinal cord injury, we encourage you to contact your VA representative to see what type of quadriplegic assistive technology you qualify to receive through the VA.  In many cases, communication devices for quadriplegics and environmental control units for disabled individuals (i.e. the autonoME) are covered.

If you are a disabled veteran with a spinal cord injury, we welcome the opportunity to help you and your family.  The Military Times has an excellent article about VA compensation for veterans with spinal cord injuries.

ASI’s Brice Green Selected to Present at the 2018 Assistive Technology Industry Conference (ATIA)

ASI Company News, Blog, News, Who is ASI?

ASI’s Brice Green Selected to Present at the 2018 Assistive Technology Industry Conference (ATIA) Our own Brice Green has been selected to present at the ATIA 2018 conference in Orlando, Florida held January 21st – February 3rd, 2018.  Green will be presenting a session titled, Combining Environmental Control with Speech Generation to Achieve Maximum Independence.  According to Green:

“Effectively combining environmental control with speech generation can be challenging, especially when the patient is required to use multiple devices, platforms and software. The autonoME, developed by Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI), is unique in that it combines both an environmental control unit (ECU) and speech generating device (SGD) into one complete package. This allows once mobile and verbal individuals now faced with losing their independence the ability to control their environment and generate speech using one single interface. The autonoME’s advanced augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) offers versatility and features which can be customized to meet the specific needs of each patient.  Most importantly, it is powered by the easy to learn and user friendly Grid 3 software. The efficacy of the autonoME has been quite impressive in both residential and hospital settings.”

We are excited to have the opportunity to discuss in-depth how this technology can benefit quadriplegics, and individuals with debilitating diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and progress forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Special thank you to Smartbox who invited us to apply to speak at this conference.  Neil Hanson, Commercial Director of Smartbox, will be flying in from the UK to join us for the presentation.

If you are planning to attend ATIA 2018, please let us know.  We will be happy to schedule a personalized live demonstration of the autonoME for you!

It Can Happen to Anyone…

Blog, Who is ASI?

Life is very precious – and often times much more fragile than we think.  The dedicated staff at ASI works with quadriplegics every day.  And, each day, we meet people whose lives have been changed forever.  The truth is, we are all just one accident or disease away from being one of the clients we serve.  We come to work each and every day with the mindset of doing what we do to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.  One aspect we love about our jobs is the fact that we focus on personalized customer service.  Many companies simply send their units to clients and provide technical support through an outsourced call center.  At ASI, our technicians visit each home, hospital or facility where the unit is being installed.  We not only perform the installation, but we train individuals, caregivers and therapists on how to use the unit and how optimize it to serve the clients specific needs.  We are also available for ongoing technical support, so our clients never have to feel alone.

Why is customer service and support so important to us?  For one, we truly care about the people we serve.  We also enjoy meeting them and getting to know them.  We often spend extra time just chatting and sharing experiences with our clients.  You see, 99% of the individuals we serve were fully functional until they were dealt a hand which changed their lives – and the lives of those who love them – forever.

Below is a link to an inspiring story of a military veteran who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).  He is not letting the disease control or define him. In fact, he says it has freed him up to do other things, including ministering to patients in hospitals and nursing homes:

Read Story

There are various stages and types of MS.  In its most progressive form, individuals with the disease often find renewed hope and independence from environmental control units (ECUs) and augmentative alternative communication (AAC).  If you or someone you know has a progressive form of MS and would like to learn more about how we can help, give us a call.  We would love to talk with you.

Lisa Swiger

Accessibility Services Inc. Program Director to Serve as Marketing Chair for Citrus County Blessings Program

(Homosassa, FL) – Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) announced today that Lisa Swiger, Program Manager, was elected to the Board of Directors of Citrus County Harvest, Inc. a 501(c)(3) that operates the Citrus County Blessings (Blessings) program. Blessings provides nutritional breakfasts, lunches and dinners to children on weekends, when families do not have access to government-subsidized meals.

“This is an exciting opportunity to help a worthwhile cause,” says Swiger. “Hunger is a definite problem, and the services Blessings provides bridges the gap of federal assistance. Without Blessings, many children would go with little or no nourishment over the weekends.”

According to a recent article published in the Citrus County Chronicle, 68% of school aged children in Citrus County are enrolled in federally funded free / reduced breakfast and lunch programs. Blessings finds that many of these children’s families/caretakers cannot provide adequate nutrition from lunch on Friday to breakfast on Monday morning. 85% of the children served by Blessings are ages six to 11, while 15% are ages 12 to 17.

“Lisa came with high recommendations to our Board and we are blessed to have her as a part of our team,” explains Grace Hengesbach, Executive Director of Citrus County Blessings.

“Working for ASI, Lisa knows what it means to change a life through hard work. Her passion for helping others in need extends well to our mission and she is already stepping up to the challenge as the chair of our marketing committee. I look forward to working with Lisa as we continue feeding hungry children in our community.”

Blessings currently serves 1250 children per week, although the need is much greater. As a member of the Board of Directors, Swiger will lead the marketing committee to help brand the organization and recruit additional support.

“ASI encourages our employees to get involved in the community,” says Maggie Thompson, President of ASI. “Blessings plays a crucial role in combating hunger and we are very proud that Lisa has been elected to serve on its board.”

About Citrus County Blessings

Blessings volunteers deliver nourishing meals to over 1,250 kids per week. For more information on the program, volunteering or donating, please visit http://citruscountyblessings.com.

Maggie’s Moment – Recognizing The Key Training Center

Blog, Community Connections & Resources, Who is ASI?

News/Blog We are a proud supporter of The Key Training Center, a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization serving adults with developmental disabilities.  Based in Citrus County, the center provides residential, vocational and adult day services, to hundreds of developmentally disabled adults.  It is the only facility of it kind in the area.

I personally commend this organization and their dedicated, compassionate staff.  ASI is proud to make a contribution to help support The Key Training Center’s very important mission.
