autonoME Update: Upgrade to Message Bank

autonoME Software Latest Updates

The latest autonoME update allows you to use any input method to record a personal message in your own voice. Watch this brief tutorial to see how:

  1. To begin, select “Message Banking” from the Main Menu.
  2. Click the “Add” button at the top of the screen.
  3. The keyboard allows you to name the phrase you’re going to record. Type a name based on the phrase.
  4. Select “Next” at the top of the screen.
  5. Next, choose the duration of the recording based on how long it is going to take you to speak the phrase.
  6. Before you begin recording, check that the “Message Bank Phrase” is correct and that your microphone is working (the green bar is lighting up).
  7. Click “Start Recording”. Once the countdown clock in the middle of the screen reaches “0” and the blue area turns green, begin speaking the phrase.
  8. Review your recording by clicking “Review”.
  9. To edit your recording, click “Redo” and the autonoME system will take you back to the recording screen.
  10. Once you are satisfied with your message, select “Save”.
  11. Now, your new message is listed with the other previously recorded messages and ready for use anytime.

Software Update: Customized Speech Rates

autonoME Software Latest Updates, News

Software Update Customized Speech Rates

In our latest update of the autonoME software, our engineers have created an option for End Users to manage and customize the rate at which their automated speech plays back ranging from fast, medium, and slow, as well as a default setting.

The update was inspired by the real-life experience of an autonoME user who is currently using the platform as an alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) device, Ken Thompson. Mr. Thompson spoke with one of our team members, Delaney Shepherd, during an in-service visit. He expressed the importance of having his new voice, generated by the autonoME device, speak with a cadence that better resembles his own. Mr. Thompson’s insight into the importance of working with users to create a voice that feels more like their own served as an “Ah-Ha” moment for our team. He currently relies on the autonoME to communicate with his co-workers during meetings but there are numerous other ways this can be beneficial.

Effective communication is extremely important to our End Users. Now, autonoME users have more options and are able to mirror their natural speaking timbre by adjusting the speed at which the augmentative speech is played back.

Accessibility Services, Inc.

Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) is extremely excited to welcome the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation and their “Let Us Do Good Village” to the neighborhood.

The foundation was started in honor of fallen firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller and other first responders who gave their lives on September 11th, 2001. They have broken ground on a one-of-a-kind community of approximately 100 mortgage free homes exclusively for seriously injured veterans and families of fallen military members and first responders.

The community, aptly named “Let Us Do Good Village,” is being built in Land O’Lakes of Pasco County, Florida which is very close to one of ASI’s offices. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome these amazing people to the area!

“ASI salutes the efforts of Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation and all of the exemplary work they do to support families of first responders and military who have given so much to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy,” says Lisa Swiger, President of Accessibility Services, Inc. “ASI was founded to serve disabled veterans. We have since expanded our mission to help all individuals with severe spinal cord injuries, progressive illnesses and other disabilities, but we are still passionate about the military and wholeheartedly support the mission of worthy organizations such as Tunnel 2 Towers.”

Control Your Environment Without Interrupting Your Entertainment

A new update to the autonoME Hospital software now allows users to control their environment without interrupting their favorite movies and television shows.

Previously, when a user needed to adjust the position of their bed or turn on/off their lights, they would have to exit the television portion of the autonoME device and access the proper ECU screen. Now, a new control menu gives users the opportunity to easily control their bed and turn lights on and off, all while continuing to enjoy the entertainment portion of the autonoME.

Voice Assistive Technology: An Overview of “my own voice” Software

(part two)

We are continuing our series highlighting the my-own-voice software developed by Acapela Group.  Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) is proud to partner with Acapela Group to provide their advanced voice assistive technology software to our autonoME users.  Version 3 of my-own-voice has many upgrades and added features. Let’s take a look:

Custom Messages

This feature makes the autonoME equipped with my-own-voice the perfect ALS communication device. Users can now record additional custom messages early in their disease progression.  These custom messages will add more intonation and prosody to the synthetic voice.

Voice Tuning Personalization

Another feature that makes the autonoME equipped with my-own-voice such a superior speech generating device is the ability for users to tune their voice in the online type and talk demo page.  This function was available in previous software versions, however, this latest version allows users to save specific settings to ensure the voice is built and delivered with custom settings.

Recorder Applications

The autonoME is all about meeting the customer where they are and providing them with a superior user experience. The latest version of the my-own-voice software offers users the choice to record either in the Acapela recorder application or using the online recorder application.

Voice banking is extremely important to individuals with progressive diseases such as ALS.  The autonoME is a combined custom environmental control unit/speech generating device with advanced augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and voice assistive technology features. If you would like to learn more about how the autonoME’s voice assistive technology can improve the quality of life for you and/or a loved one, we can help.  Give us a call to learn more today!

Voice Assistive Technology: An Overview of “my own voice” Software

(part one)

We are extremely excited about the new version of my-own-voice which was just released last month.  As we have discussed in previous articles, voice assistive technology has advanced significantly over the past several years. Our proprietary autonoME custom environmental control unit and speech generating device incorporates my-own-voice software, developed by Acapela Group.

Before we begin discussing the newly released software enhancements, let’s go over some of the software’s key features and capabilities. The Acapela Group’s my-own- voice software allows autonoME users to “bank” their own voice while they still have speech so that it can be synthetically re-created when they lose their ability to speak.  This makes the autonoME especially important when it comes to ALS communication as individuals diagnosed with the disease can “bank” their own unique expressions early in disease progression. This, along with the ability to accommodate different input methods (speech, touch, eye gaze, sip and puff, head tracking, etc.) makes the autonoME the most effective and powerful ALS communication device on the market today.

The software development team at Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) is very selective about the companies we partner with.  Acapela group has invested much time, resources and energy to create what we believe to be the best software to help individuals preserve their own voice and unique expressions.  Not all voice assistive technology is equal and ASI is committed to providing the customers we serve with high quality assistive technology for quadriplegics and individuals with progressive diseases such as ALS and MS.

Our next article will highlight some of the new features of the my-own-voice software. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a progressive disease such as ALS or MS, we can help.  Give us a call to learn more today.

Giving Patients with ALS and Their Loved Ones Improved Quality of Life

assistive technology for quadriplegics

Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) has been providing and developing assistive technology for quadriplegics and individuals with severe spinal cord injuries for more than 30 years.  We have found that the same custom environmental control unit/ communication devices for quadriplegics are also ideal for individuals with progressive diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Our signature autonoME is an integrated environmental control unit (ECU) /speech generating device with full computing capabilities.  Our newly re-designed autonoME Hospital is the world’s first hospital ECU / speech generating device with a fully integrated television experience.  Best of all, the autonoME is equipped with different input methods to accommodate varying levels and progression of disease.

Let’s take a closer look at how the autonoME custom environmental control unit/speech generating device offers patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis improved quality of life.

Environmental Control

Early assistive technology for quadriplegics focused on environmental control. Technology in ECU devices such as the autonoME has advanced to allow an individual who is immobile due to ALS the ability to turn on lights, control the television, adjust the bed, turn on a fan, call a caregiver and/or nurse, make a phone call, send a text, use a computer, interact on Social Media and more.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Communication devices for quadriplegics have come a long way over the years.  The augmentative and alternative communication features of the autonoME allow individuals with ALS to communicate with loved ones, caregivers, therapists and medical staff. Voice banking can be initiated early in the diagnosis while the person is able to speak.  This enables them to communicate using their own voice and unique expressions even after they lose their ability to speak.  Being able to say, “I love you” in their own voice and communicate using their own expressions becomes especially important as ALS progresses.
