Smart EADL FAQs

An Electronic Aid to Daily Living (EADL) is a specialized assistive technology system that allows individuals with physical disabilities to control their physical environment. Unlike a standard smart home setup, which is designed primarily for convenience, a Smart EADL integrates critical accessibility controls, such as nurse call systems and specialized hospital beds, into a secure, pre-configured framework built for daily independence.

ASI’s Smart EADL system utilizes Alexa-based home automation to control:

  • Bed
  • Thermostat
  • Television, cable, and streaming devices
  • Deadbolt locks
  • Nurse call
  • Automatic door opener
  • Lights

Additionally, the Smart EADL system can be programmed to deliver automated reminders for daily tasks. It can also be used to access weather, news, games, brain teasers, health and wellness info, and more. ASI configures Alexa Routines and Groups during setup, so the user does not need to build these features independently.

An Alexa Routine is a set of multiple actions that happen automatically after a single trigger, such as a voice phrase, a scheduled time, or another event. The Smart EADL system uses Routines to combine several tasks into one command. For example, saying “Alexa, good morning” can turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, and open the blinds at the same time. Routines reduce the number of separate commands a user needs to remember and speak.

An Alexa Group organizes multiple smart devices under a single name, such as “Bedroom” or “Nurse Call Area.” Once devices are grouped, a user can control every device in that group with one command, such as “Alexa, turn off Bedroom.” ASI configures these groups during setup to match the layout of the user’s home or hospital room, so the user does not need to remember individual device names.

Yes. The Smart EADL system relies on Alexa, which requires an active internet connection to process voice commands and control connected devices. If the internet or Wi-Fi connection drops, the system will not respond to voice commands until the connection is restored. ASI recommends a stable, dedicated internet connection to ensure the system functions reliably at all times.

The Smart EADL system is designed for individuals who are able to use voice prompts. For individuals with progressive conditions (such as ALS or MS) where physical capabilities can shift, the autonoME Residential, autonoME Hospital, or autonoMEGO system is more suitable. These are designed so that a user can start by using touch or voice control, and seamlessly transition to a head-tracking mouse, sip-and-puff, eye-gaze, etc. as needed, all without requiring an entirely new system or an entirely new user interface.
